| The new New Zealand passport design: the history of navigation Peter Montgomery Ocean Design, New Zealand In 2008, the department of Internal Affairs sort expressions of interest in redesigning the New Zealand Passport. Peter Montgomery, while at Clemenger BBDO, was successful in a pitch to use a story of navigation in the national travel document. New Zealanders are known to be prolific travellers, maybe even ‘the world’s greatest travellers’. A nation framed by water, international travel has always been a ‘journey’ and throughout time, all New Zealanders, or their ancestors, journeyed here from somewhere else. The passport concept combined the theme of navigation and our evolution from a place of discovery, to a place of destination. It follows the journeys of the earliest explorers to the travels made by New Zealanders today. Arrival, departure, place and time are represented figuratively and metaphorically throughout the pages. The visual journey begins at the horizon with navigation represented through the patterns of migratory birds. The point of view moves toward New Zealand and up and over in an aerial exploration of the country. Peter will present the elements evolution of the design process, from the research stage, the consultation and the technique and tools used to execute the final design. |
