| The Mapping of the Mawson AAE 1910-1914 John Manning Monash University, Australia The Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) left Hobart in December 1910 to explore the unknown coastline of Antarctica below the Australian continent. Comprised mainly of Australian and New Zealand scientists, it had one Swiss and several British participants. The last members of the expedition arrived back in Adelaide in March 2014, but it had been a dramatic expedition with the loss of two lives. In this paper each of the maps of the various parties is examined and the definitive work of the south magnetic pole party and the definitive work of the magnetician Webb is acknowledged in providing a much better determination of the location of the south magnetic pole. |
