| Large Scale Topographic Data: A view from a street level Igor Drecki University of Auckland, New Zealand Both, the 2005-2010 Topographic Information Strategy and the Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) Topographic Strategy March 2014 (Draft) refer to the development of processes and partnerships with appropriate organisations to secure the supply of topographic information for production of national topographic datasets (Goal 2). Most promising organisations that could support the above goal are local councils, which collect and maintain large scale geospatial databases to support their obligatory operations. Auckland Council is one of such organisations that principally collects geospatial information for urban environment, from streets and kerbs to parks and reserves. This paper looks at the quality of Auckland Council’s geospatial information from the perspective of cartographic production. A set of large scale urban maps were produced for pedestrian and cycling navigation. Issues concerning accuracy and quality of information are discussed in details, together with comments concerning usability of some layers of information. Finally, a list of recommendation is presented on how to harness council’s geospatial information for building up a national large scale topographic dataset. |
