| Environmental Pollution Risk Map of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Using GIS Techniques Tayseer Darweesh and Ahmed Alhijaj Royal Jordanian Geographic Centre, Jordan
Geospatial analysis, using GIS, has been a useful tool to solve problems in the environmental and life sciences, in particular ecology and geology. It has extended to almost all industries including, natural resources and public safety (i.e. emergency management). In addition, environmental risk mapping help risk analysts and scientists to explore the spatial nature of the effects of environmental stressors such as pollutants.
In this study, GIS technique was used to identify the causes of environmental pollution and methods of treatment. An environmental risk map was produced that shows the extent of pollution and its relation to population, surface water and groundwater. The map included pesticides and groundwater information in order to measure the extent of contamination and pollution. Also it included the contamination resulted from carbon dioxide, sulfur, and water pollution.
Field survey was also conducted in cooperation with the concerned authorities. After collecting all the causes of pollution, such sewage systems from household, waste ponds and the leakage to the groundwater, the final map shows the risk rate which included the type of contamination, extent of pollution and the location. |
